Online fitness coaching for people in Plantation

Plantation sits in the middle of Broward, inside the Miami metro, with the Fort Lauderdale weather station under seven kilometres away. By its numbers, about one worker in six works from home, nearly every household has broadband, and the trip to work is under half an hour. That is a week with time in it, which is its own kind of problem. Diogo is based in South Florida and coaches online.

Activity and sleep in Plantation

Age-adjusted, an estimated 22.0% of adults in Plantation report no leisure-time physical activity (a modeled estimate, 95% CI 18.9 to 25.1). An estimated 38.3% usually sleep less than 7 hours in a 24-hour period (same kind of estimate, 95% CI 33.7 to 43.2).

About one adult in five reports no leisure-time activity in this model-based estimate. Read it as the backdrop: most people here are active already, and the plan is built to make that activity go somewhere.

Daily life in Plantation, by the numbers

From the Census Bureau's American Community Survey, published value and margin of error together: about 17.8% of workers who live here work from home (90% margin of error plus or minus 1.6); commuters average 27.6 minutes to work (90% margin of error plus or minus 1.0); the median age is 40.2 years (90% margin of error plus or minus 1.0); 95.0% of households have a broadband subscription (90% margin of error plus or minus 1.1).

Training through the Plantation heat

At the FT LAUDERDALE station (USC00083163, 6.6 km from the Census internal point), the 1991–2020 normal July high is 90.2 F, with 74.8 days a year at or above 90 F on average, an average January low of 57.7 F, and 68.77 inches of rain a year.

With the station this close, these figures describe the city well. They say what the other pages on this station say: lift indoors on hot days, keep the outdoor work early or late, and use the mild months for the rest.

How coaching works from a distance

Diogo is based in South Florida and coaches online. Your workouts live in the Trainerize app, you weigh in twice a week, you send progress photos every two weeks, and we talk on a weekly call — Plantation is on Eastern time, the same as me, so a midday call is as easy to set as an evening one. Between calls, you can message me with questions.

I work from home. Why do I still not train?

Because a day with no fixed edges has no fixed slot. With about one worker in six at home here, this is a week I would expect to see often from Plantation, and the plan answers it with a time, not a hope: the session goes at the same point in the day every time, usually before the first call or in the hour the afternoon goes quiet, and it is written in the app the night before. The weekly call, on a connection almost every household here has, is where the next week’s slots are set. Consistency beats motivation is the longer argument.

Can I run outside here, or is it indoor cardio all year?

Outside for most of the year, with a timing rule for the rest. More than seventy days a year at or above ninety degrees is the part that needs the rule: in the hot months the run goes before sunrise or after dark, and a bad day becomes a short indoor session instead. January lows in the high fifties are the other part: in the cool months the outdoor work can go at any hour. The plan carries both versions from the start, so the switch between them is a note on the weekly call, not a new program.
