Online fitness coaching for people in the Naples–Marco Island area
The Naples metro is Collier County, from Naples down the Gulf coast to Marco Island. Its airport weather station has a partial record, sixteen to eighteen years rather than the full thirty, and on that record it shows January lows in the mid-fifties and more than a hundred days a year at or above 90 F. Diogo is based in South Florida and coaches online. Collier County is on Eastern time, the same as me, so the call fits your evening.
The CDC’s metro survey and the Naples–Marco Island area
The CDC’s metro-area survey has no activity or strength-training figure for the Naples–Marco Island area for 2023 or later, so none is shown here, and the state’s figure is not used in its place.
The state survey stays on the Florida page (linked below) rather than being passed off as local, so the figures for Collier County here are the Census and weather ones.
Daily life in the Naples–Marco Island area, by the numbers
From the Census Bureau's American Community Survey, published value and margin of error together: about 16.4% of workers who live here work from home (90% margin of error plus or minus 0.9); commuters average 26.1 minutes to work (90% margin of error plus or minus 0.6); the median age is 53.3 years (90% margin of error plus or minus 0.2); 92.5% of households have a broadband subscription (90% margin of error plus or minus 0.7). Metro-area figures: your own city may differ.
Training through the heat in the Naples–Marco Island area
At the NAPLES MUNI AP station (USW00012897, 2.0 km from Naples' Census internal point), the 1991–2020 normal July high is 90.8 F, with 103.5 days a year at or above 90 F on average, an average January low of 55.9 F, and 49.55 inches of rain a year. Partial records behind some of these: July high 18 years (flag R, representative: at least 10 but fewer than 24 years), January low 16 years (flag R, representative: at least 10 but fewer than 24 years), 90 F days 17 years (flag R, representative: at least 10 but fewer than 24 years), precipitation 17 years (flag R, representative: at least 10 but fewer than 24 years).
All four figures rest on sixteen to eighteen years of record rather than the thirty a full normal uses, as the flags above spell out. Treat them as the shape of the year, not exact values: a mild winter and a long hot season.
How coaching works from a distance
Diogo is based in South Florida and coaches online. Your workouts live in the Trainerize app, you weigh in twice a week, you send progress photos every two weeks, and we talk on a weekly call scheduled around your time zone. Between calls, you can message me with questions.
January lows in the mid-fifties. Is winter the time to train outdoors?
Yes, and the plan leans on it. On the partial record above, January lows sit in the mid-fifties, which makes the cool months the easiest stretch of the year for outdoor work at any hour: a long walk at lunch, a run in the afternoon, conditioning outside on a weekend. The other side of the year is the long one, with more than a hundred days at or above 90 F and July highs just above ninety, so from the first hot week the outdoor sessions move to early morning or after dark and the lifting stays indoors. The year has two settings, and the weekly call is where we switch between them.
Can I do the whole program at home?
Most of it, if the setup is right. About one worker in six here works from home and more than nine households in ten have broadband, so for a lot of people the simplest plan is one that never leaves the house: the session in the app, the weigh-ins and photos from your phone, the weekly call on the home connection. An adjustable pair of dumbbells, a bench and a band cover most of the program. What training at home needs that a gym does not is a set time, because the house never closes; the plan names the slot and the weekly call checks that it held. Heavy leg work is the part a gym does better, if one is close.
