Online fitness coaching for people in the Virginia Beach–Chesapeake–Norfolk area

The Virginia Beach metro covers Hampton Roads, from Virginia Beach, Chesapeake and Norfolk across the water to Newport News and down into northeastern North Carolina, with a coastal climate and a small work-from-home share. Diogo is based in South Florida and coaches online. Hampton Roads is on Eastern time, the same as me, so the call can go anywhere in your evening.

How the Virginia Beach–Chesapeake–Norfolk area trains, per the CDC’s metro survey

In 2023, an estimated 40.4% of adults in the Virginia Beach–Chesapeake–Norfolk area reported muscle-strengthening exercises two or more times a week (CDC SMART BRFSS, 95% CI 36.6 to 44.2). In 2024, an estimated 19.1% reported no physical activity or exercise in the past month (CDC SMART BRFSS, 95% CI 16.4 to 21.8). Metro samples are smaller than the state survey’s, so read the range in brackets more than the single number.

How coaching works from a distance

Diogo is based in South Florida and coaches online. Your workouts live in the Trainerize app, you weigh in twice a week, you send progress photos every two weeks, and we talk on a weekly call scheduled around your time zone. Between calls, you can message me with questions.

I go into work every day. Where does training fit?

Around fixed days, which can make it easier, not harder. The figure above says only about one in eight workers here works from home, so most weeks have a set shape: the same start time, the same drive. The plan uses that shape. Sessions go at the same point in the day on the same days, before work or straight after, because a fixed slot is easier to protect than a floating one. A short fallback session covers the days that run long. With an average commute under half an hour, there is usually room on either side of the workday, and the weekly call moves things when a week does not look like the last one.

Does the coastal weather change the plan?

It changes when the outdoor work happens, not whether the lifting does. The station figures above give the area warm summers, January lows just above freezing and plenty of rain. So outdoor walks and runs go early or late in summer, to the middle of the day in winter, and indoors on a wet week, while the strength sessions stay indoors on the same days all year. The change of season is where routines usually slip, so the first weekly call of each season resets the outdoor half of the plan before the habit breaks. The lifting is the constant that keeps the year moving forward.
