Online fitness coaching for people in Rhode Island

Rhode Island sits near the middle of almost every number on these pages: the commute, the share who lift, the share who report no activity, the share working from home. It is the smallest state on these pages and one of the easiest to write a week for, because nothing in it is far. Coaching for Rhode Island is about using that. Diogo is based in South Florida and coaches online. Rhode Island is on Eastern time, the same as me.

How Rhode Island trains, per the CDC's state survey

In 2023, 40.7% of adults in Rhode Island reported muscle-strengthening activities on 2 or more days a week (BRFSS, 95% CI 38.8 to 42.7). In 2025, 21.4% reported no leisure-time physical activity at all (BRFSS, 95% CI 20.0 to 22.9).

Daily life in Rhode Island, by the numbers

From the Census Bureau's American Community Survey, published value and margin of error together: about 13.0% of workers who live here work from home (90% margin of error plus or minus 0.5); commuters average 25.5 minutes to work (90% margin of error plus or minus 0.3); the median age is 40.6 years (90% margin of error plus or minus 0.2); 91.7% of households have a broadband subscription (90% margin of error plus or minus 0.3). State figures: your own city may differ.

How coaching works from a distance

Diogo is based in South Florida and coaches online. Your workouts live in the Trainerize app, you weigh in twice a week, you send progress photos every two weeks, and we talk on a weekly call scheduled around your time zone. Between calls, you can message me with questions.

Nothing here is more than half an hour away. Why do I still skip the gym?

Because distance was never the reason. Rhode Island’s commute sits in the middle of these pages and the share working from home is a little below it, so most weeks here have an evening and a morning with room in them; what they do not have is a decision made in advance about which one gets used. The plan makes that decision: two or three sessions on named days, a smallest version for the tired ones, and a weekly call that checks whether the named days held. A gym that is fifteen minutes away is only an advantage once the session is already written down. Consistency without motivation is the idea behind it.

The numbers say my state is average. What does that mean for me?

Only that the state is not the reason. The survey puts Rhode Island close to the middle of these pages for the share of adults lifting twice a week and for the share reporting no activity at all, which says the usual split: some people train, a fifth do nothing, and most are somewhere between with a program that starts and stops. The plan is written for you, not for the average: it begins from the week you actually have, with the lifts you can already do, and it progresses from there on purpose. Why you keep starting over is the longer answer for the between group.

Does online coaching work when I could just walk into a gym and ask?

It works for a different reason than a trainer on the floor does. What you get online is the program, the weekly read of your log and your weigh-ins, and a call every week with the same person, and that part does not depend on where the gym is. Rhode Island has one of the higher household broadband shares on these pages, and the median age is a little above the middle, so the plan assumes an adult with a job and a gym nearby who wants the training to add up to something. Online coach vs. a trainer at your gym is the honest comparison.
