Online fitness coaching for people in California
California is the most populous state on these pages and, by its own survey, one of the more active: fewer adults report doing nothing than in most of the states on these pages, and more households are online than almost anywhere. The time difference is the one practical thing to plan around, and it turns out to be an advantage. Diogo is based in South Florida and coaches online. California is on Pacific time, three hours behind me, so the weekly call usually lands in your early evening or my early morning, and both work.
How California trains, per the CDC's state survey
In 2023, 39.7% of adults in California reported muscle-strengthening activities on 2 or more days a week (BRFSS, 95% CI 38.3 to 41.0). In 2024, 20.7% reported no leisure-time physical activity at all (BRFSS, 95% CI 19.5 to 22.0).
Daily life in California, by the numbers
From the Census Bureau's American Community Survey, published value and margin of error together: about 17.2% of workers who live here work from home (90% margin of error plus or minus 0.1); commuters average 28.7 minutes to work (90% margin of error plus or minus 0.1); the median age is 37.9 years (90% margin of error plus or minus 0.1); 93.5% of households have a broadband subscription (90% margin of error plus or minus 0.1). State figures: your own city may differ.
How coaching works from a distance
Diogo is based in South Florida and coaches online. Your workouts live in the Trainerize app, you weigh in twice a week, you send progress photos every two weeks, and we talk on a weekly call scheduled around your time zone. Between calls, you can message me with questions.
Does the three-hour time difference get in the way?
It helps more than it hurts. Your six in the evening is my nine, so the weekly call fits after your workday without touching your morning, and a message you send at the end of your day is waiting for me when mine starts, which means you often have an answer before you train. With nearly every household online and a sizeable share of Californians working from home, the mechanics are the easy part. The plan is the same wherever you are: workouts in the app, two weigh-ins a week, one call.
California already seems active. What does coaching add here?
Direction. The state figures above say two things at once: a smaller share of adults here report no activity at all, and yet fewer than half report lifting two or more days a week. That describes a common profile here: people who move, hike, cycle and walk, and who have never had a strength program that goes anywhere. The plan gives that movement a structure, two or three lifting sessions built around the big movements and progressed on purpose, and the weekly call keeps it moving when the trail is more appealing than the gym.
I’m younger and busy. Is a coach overkill?
Sometimes. California’s median age is on the young side of these pages and its commutes are on the long side, which is exactly the combination that produces plans written for a perfect week and abandoned in the second one. If you already train consistently and your numbers move, keep going. If you know what to do and keep not doing it, the thing missing is not information. How to decide whether a coach is worth it.
