Online fitness coaching for people in Michigan
Michigan commutes less than most states on these pages, works from home about as much as the middle, and lifts more than average by the state survey. It also has a winter that lasts, which is the real design constraint. Coaching for Michigan is about a plan that is the same in February as it was in July. Diogo is based in South Florida and coaches online. Nearly all of Michigan is on Eastern time, the same as me; the western Upper Peninsula counties are on Central.
How Michigan trains, per the CDC's state survey
In 2023, 42.0% of adults in Michigan reported muscle-strengthening activities on 2 or more days a week (BRFSS, 95% CI 40.6 to 43.4). In 2025, 21.6% reported no leisure-time physical activity at all (BRFSS, 95% CI 20.5 to 22.6).
Daily life in Michigan, by the numbers
From the Census Bureau's American Community Survey, published value and margin of error together: about 13.5% of workers who live here work from home (90% margin of error plus or minus 0.1); commuters average 24.2 minutes to work (90% margin of error plus or minus 0.1); the median age is 40.2 years (90% margin of error plus or minus 0.1); 90.5% of households have a broadband subscription (90% margin of error plus or minus 0.1). State figures: your own city may differ.
How coaching works from a distance
Diogo is based in South Florida and coaches online. Your workouts live in the Trainerize app, you weigh in twice a week, you send progress photos every two weeks, and we talk on a weekly call scheduled around your time zone. Between calls, you can message me with questions.
How does the plan survive a Michigan winter?
By never depending on the weather. The lifting lives indoors all year, in a gym or a basement, so the two or three sessions a week do not change when the snow comes; only the walking does, and that moves to a treadmill or a hallway with a floor you can hit in slippers. The state survey says a good share of Michiganders already lift twice a week; the ones who stop usually stop in December, when a plan with outdoor pieces in it quietly dies. The winter version is written before winter.
I work in the plant and my shift changes. Can a plan follow that?
A plan written in sessions can. Michigan has a shorter commute than most states here and most people do not work from home, which usually means fixed hours out of the house and evenings or mornings that are honestly free. When the shift rotates, the sessions move with it: the plan says which workouts happen this week, not which days, and the weekly call is where we place them around the schedule you have been given. Coaching for a week that doesn’t hold still is the full version.
Up north, our internet is slow. Does that matter?
Hardly. Most Michigan households have a broadband subscription and the weekly call runs on a phone connection anyway; the workouts live in an app, the weigh-ins are a number you type. If the video is poor one week, we talk. The median age here is a little older than most states on these pages, which shows up in the plan as progression by reps and sets before weight, and recovery days left alone.
